What Lessons from Senator Kennedy

Whether you agree with Ted Kennedy’s political views or not, there’s something that can be learned from his leadership approach. Here are some comments made by a few of his colleagues.
Vice President Joe Biden said Kennedy's secret as a legislator was "his lack of vitriol, his lack of pettiness forced some of the less generous members of our community to act bigger than they were. It was remarkable to watch."

Senator Orrin Hatch, a Republican from Utah, recounted that when he came to the Senate in 1977 he had told his constituents that he was going to fight Kennedy. "I hadn't the slightest idea that I would eventually have a strong working relationship with, and love for, the man that I came to fight," he said.

Senator John McCain, a Republican from Arizona, said, "We disagreed on most issues, but but I admired his passion for his convictions … and his uncanny sense for when differences could be bridged and his cause advanced by degrees."
Could the same be said for Mayor Morris?

This spirit of working together is sorely missed here in Aurora. Last term Councillor Phyllis Morris used a confrontational style battle with Mayor Tim Jones to campaign on the need for change.

Most informed voters now see what type of change she meant. Much can be learned from the comments about Senator Kennedy.

I just read on Councillor Buck's website that the town's solicitor will now be acting as the acting town clerk !

Am I the only one that finds that ironic ? I guess it is a sign of the times.

The one point I must make about Sen. Ted Kennedy and the relation to Mayor Morris is only what was pointed out as to her relationship to Tim Jones .
Mr Jones may be or will be imperfect as many political figures ,however he did something that many can never do or will ever do .
When I was at a very low point when political figures and others were putting up so many hurdles and seemed to not care about my opinion or passion he stepped forward .
Mr Jones said a few words I will never forget and all of our children should know and that is
'If it comes from the heart it cant be wrong ".
I have and never will forget that moment because I almost threw in the towel and if I had many would not know what I know now .
Thank you Tim ,you are real and dont let anyone tell you otherwise .
We all make mistakes and it is how we move forward that makes others take notice and some very jealous .
Moving forward from difficult times is an amazing gift .
One you share with others and say thanks to those who matter to your life in a big way .
Bless you Tim you have been a real friend when others walked by and away .

When is the Province going to stand up and investigate this bunch ,especially the Mayor .
The fact that "The Dream Team "is getting away with their "Carnival Act "is disturbing .
Ever notice the whole lot and the GO6 are all over the Farmers Market together .
Maybe we now know who is pulling the strings on this bogus Farmers Market committee that is getting OUR tax money .
Should not Shelley Ware at the Town be operating the special events without bias unlike this St Kitts joke thats going on .
Also does anyone really know how much the Market has received since the "Lone Granger "took over and his "Tonto" St Kitts .
Oh Trigger ,or the back of the costume is played in this bad low budget western by our grand leader.
God save us from a "Granger and his Posse "part 2 .

I totally agree with what Anonymous said: The fact that "'The Dream Team' is getting away with their 'Carnival Act'" truly IS disturbing.

Has this blog now become the "sing-the-praises of and re-elect Tim Jones and his crew"?
The fomer mayor and council were as guilty as this one when it comes to conflict of interest.
Incidentally, not once did Tim Jones ever acknowledge or return a call or email..... except when it was election time!

To 11:38 AM

The former Mayor Jones always returned my calls and even came to the house to look into a problem that I had. He did not only give an hour or so Friday morning like Morris does now to meet with the residents.
His former councils actually did get a lot done even though they were dyfunctional at times mainly caused by current mayor Morris when she was a councillor.
He did not get Aurora's name in the Star or Globe as Morris is doing these days.
There is no comparison, Jones was a Mayor where Morris is a poor example of a mayor.

To Anonymous 11:38 who wrote "Has this blog now become the "sing-the-praises of and re-elect Tim Jones and his crew"?
Actually the answer is no! Just people realizing that while the Tim Jones era was not perfect, the root cause of almost all the dysfunction his councils faced was the direct result of one devious opportunist, our current Mayor Phyllis Morris. Not only was she the cancer disrupting council (like some call Ms. Buck today)her credentials like her HR experience has directly resulted in a disturbing mass exit in the staff ranks. Say what you want but the facts show we were better off with Tim Jones than with Phylilis Morris and that is what this forumn is pointing to.

While I fully support the recent coalition ad in the Auroran, I would urge the writer or writers to think carefully on how they word their next "pieces" as a negative ad campaign will be viewed by many as sour grapes. Keep the ads thoughtful and respectful - otherwise the coalition runs the risk of the ad campaign actually turning off voters which would ultimately assist the GOS in their quest for re-election.

Here's to change in 2010!

I must add that when Mr Jones assisted myself he was not a Mayor or candidate for any post .
What Tim did was as a citizen and I respect that .
Tim has also followed up with me to see if I need a boost or just to talk to someone .
In this day and age ,please give me examples of someone going this far with what some politicians seem to see as common citizens .
Character is the value of each citizen and how they should be judged .
I do think that many of our present leaders and those who have influence have lost sight of who put them there .
The common man may not have all the wealth ,however they have time and a voice .
These two things I would value and respect in a community leader ,other than the dollars and carnival events that got them shallowly elected .
Please ask each candidate what they have achieved including original ideas and concepts .
You may be suprised to find out if the truth is told ,just how much is just credit for the work of others .
The biggest issue could be ,if so many have left and the infighting remains ....well as Archie Bunker said "Ifso ,Fatso "then the cancer is still there .
So citizens of Aurora "Whats the common denominator "?
The formula may as well be one half Mayor and 5 parts those who are not willing to be original and independant .
We need leaders for our youth ,not followers .
I just hope one of the present group stands up for what is right and tells the truth .
That person is the one I would vote for again ,but I am not holding my breath .
Tell the truth and I bet you would get hundreds of more votes next go around .
So what say you Al ,are you up to it ?
Wendy ,you say you are about the youth .
John ,Mr.Granger ,can you do what is right for our future or is this going to go to the next level .
Tell the truth because Aurora deserves so much more if you really love this Town .
I await you reply .

To Positive 2010; Do you really think that any of those Councillors are going to stand up and tell the truth? The sad part is they believe what they have been apart of is the truth. Sad, sad, sad.
They have gone after Evelyn Buck and if I remember correctly Phylis was also apart of the changing of the towns address from JOHN WEST WAY to Municipal Dr. Again a disservice to someone who was HONOURED to have his name on that Street. I believe it had something to do with some kind of political gain was their reasoning. What a joke! These individuals would not know a good thing if it stared them in the face.

"Truthful politician" is an oxymoron. There is not one that would not lie to further his/her own agenda. They only talk about honesty and integrity when campaigning and then, when elected, leave both at the door. Most do not even pick them up again when they leave.

How about 2003 when Evilina (I know this spelt wrong) withdrew her name when she learned that John West and Evelyn Buck were candidates and then demanded a recount when Evelyn was elected and Damir Vrancic seconded it. That was at a cost of $10,000.00 while she was on her way out.

Anonymous said...

I understood that Evelina didn't withdraw until the very last day -- which was the day Bill Hogg also entered the race.

It might make one think that when she realized that she couldn't bully a number of prospective Councillors, she decided to take her marbles and go home.

Typical bully behaviour.

Evelina packing up and going home? You mean there is hope for 2010?
By the way, McGinty is having an Integrity Commissioner look at all expense sheets for publicly funded agencies after the e-health and OLG fiascos. Should we recommend David Nitkin. I am sure he would be good enough for the province.... if not for the Queendom of Aurora.

Broderick Epps said...

Anonymous 10:53, no need to apoligize for the 'spelling'. Since Ms MacEachern became a councillor both town and region staff have affectionately called her Evilina for obvious reasons. Disagree with her and you are doomed. She knows everything. The recount she had the town undertake was due to her belief (also that of Ms. Morris) that the vote counting machines were badly flawed. Despite assurances to the contrary the recount occurred and I believe the change in outcome was in the single digits.Another 10K flushed down the proverbial sewer.
By the way if you really want to gag, read Sean Pearce's piece in the ERA Banner where Ms. Morris is quoted extensively. She continues to stretch the truth about the timing of Mr Nitkin's firing and the issuing of his report. A good week before it was released, Mr. Nitkin obviously in discussion with GOS played his hand where he was heading with his decision. The final report was a forgone conclusion. For Ms Morris to say she has not seen the report and it had no bearing in Mr. Nitkin's firing is stretching the facts. she absolutely knew what the report was going to say, and as usual not being what she wanted to hear .... well you know the result.

No, it's not - it's lying. Blatant and bald-faced lying.

Reminds me of the old "Walking Eagle" joke

someone who loves this town more than politics said...

I saw this quote recently and although it is John, not Ted, it has the trademark Kennedy spirit and insight:

"The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie - deliberate, contrived and dishonest - but the myth, persistent, persuasive and unrealistic. Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought."

- John F. Kennedy (1917 - 1963)

When reading this I couldn't help but see the correlation.
There are plenty of myths being propagated by the GOS that openly operate without the discomfort of thought.

How does that old idiom go "Ignorance is bliss" or is it "Ignorance is Aurora council"

What is the old "Walking Eagle? joke?

Let's chuckle to-gether

Something Fishy in Aurora said...

Names can be changed to any politician

WALKING EAGLE

Mayor Morris was invited to address a major gathering of the North American Indian Nation last weekend in Parry Sound. She spoke for almost an hour on her future plans for increasing every Native Canadian’s present standard of living. She referred to her career as Mayor of Aurora, how she had signed "YES" 1,237 times - for every Indian issue that came to her desk for approval.

Although the Mayor was vague on the details of her plan, she seemed most enthusiastic about her future ideas for helping her "red brother"

At the conclusion of her speech, the Tribes presented the Mayor with a plaque inscribed with her new Indian name - Walking Eagle. The proud Mayor then departed back to the farmers market, waving to the crowds

A news reporter later inquired to the group of chiefs of how they had come to select the new name given to the Mayor.

They explained that Walking Eagle is the name given to a bird so full of shit it can no longer fly.

Evelyn Buck said...

Thanks for sharing that.

It was more than a chuckle.

It was a laugh out loud.

I cant wait to say hello to "Walking Eagle "at the Farmers Market .
I wonder if she will react ,and then we know she reads this .
I busted a gut but then again it is hard to soar like an eagle when you surround yourself with Turkeys .
